Neelima Vallangi: A ceaseless voyager

Image
18 years of school life, a first class bachelor’s degree from top university, further studies at abroad if aspiring more, a job by late 20s, a grand salary at the end of every month, marriage, family and finally that’s how our pseudo ‘settled’ life ends. To all those who have suppressed their craving to travel and enjoy the  beauty of nature; and also to those who are confused about choosing travel over a well settled life are sure to be inspired after reading this. “If travel is what you want to do, start right away. Like they say, those who want to do it, will find a way. If not, they’ll find an excuse. Once you set your mind to a goal, it is very easy to weed out the distractions and obstructions”, is Neelima’s message to aspiring travellers. Neelima Vallangi, a graduate from IIT-Madras quit her job in Bangalore knowing what exactly would make her happy in life. A routine of spending life inside four walls was not what she desired. She loved photography...

Anakapathur's weaving desires

Image
Anakapathur, located in Kancheepuram district, is where we are travelling to. This town was once famous for its weaving and handloom textile.  A twenty minute journey in bus from Chennai Airport brings you to the Anakapathur bus depot. We waited for Mr. C. Sekhar, President of Anakapathur Weaver’s Association, at the depot wondering how the weaving centre is going to look like and if we could meet some of the women weavers at mid noon. For the past few years this association has hit the newspapers and local channels for its textile made out of organic fabre. Mr. Sekhar, a very humble man in the most ordinary fashion came on a cycle to usher us to this weaving place. A five minute walk and we reached Sekhar’s home; right opposite to his home is a cottage where weaving takes place in two shifts starting from morning till evening. A very congested building containing four to five pits where the woman stands in and weaves the fabric on the handset loom. “It’s been 15 years sinc...

Look up and say "CHEESE!"

Seems like the word “PRIVACY” could be only found in dictionaries now on. Well majority of us already post our private life on FACEBOOK which essentially even includes me.    Now pushing back all comes a new threat to privacy. Google and Apple are in a competition to come up with most detailed Ariel maps using spy cameras. In short it states that the world now can see what you are doing in your backyard! Google says that it has already sent out planes carrying spy cameras, whereas on the other hand Apple has taken over a firm that uses spy-in the-sky technology which has already been tested in about 20 locations including London. As far as I have researched on this topic I came to know that Apple cameras have excelled with their potential to look into our homes through skylight and windows. “You won’t be able to sunbath...

my true attachment

While walking on road all alone with only the street lights around me to guide my further way in this dark night, I wondered how life is? Various matters I had to face. Some where pleasant on the other side some remain in the list of my dark pasts. There are thousands of unique people I met. Some hurt me the most some became the reason behind each smile of mine. Few who never bothered me and simply went on. Not just people, broken piece of a lovely wind chime gifted to me long back by my dad, cards from my best friends which I keep safe in my diary, my childhood photos… and many more things which I keep close to my heart and never want to loose them in my life. It feels as if something just depends upon all these. Life never wanders like a lonely soul. It has a string that ties itself to people, things, and various other matters. Life feels these attachments as a support or a ladder that helps to keep you moving to greater heights. Yes it does take you to heights, but much stro...

Curtain

CUrtain Most Std XII students would have read this poem by Helen Spading. As I don't like poems, I thought it would be boring but, I must admit that my dear principal is the secret behind me not dozing off during English classes that deal with poems. One day she came to class as usual and placed her books on the table. We thought she would start a new lesson but instead she said: "Being in 12 grade you will be soon parting from your friends, school and will experience parting. I would like each of you to stand up and express your feelings on parting." Well she started from boys, they had answers like – sad, end, sorrow etc etc. Girls were like – missing, anxiety, sorrow and HAPPY!! This “happy” was by me (as...
